SERGEANT AT ARMS MARLON VARGAS

How long have you been a member of Toastmasters? Since May 2019. A little more than a year.

Why did you first join Toastmasters? I initially joined Toastmasters to improve my public speaking skills. I actually liked public speaking, but I never had the chance to practice as much as I wanted. Eventually, I would like to teach and provide quality and entertaining information to others and Toastmaster was perfect for me to practice and test my public speaking skills and ideas.

What have you learned/gained from being a part of Toastmasters? I have learned a lot more than I initially thought, Toastmasters is not only about speaking but also about listening and providing great feedback and evaluation to the members that are speaking. It has helped me tremendously in my work and personal life as I also have a different way to approach people and communicate with them. Confidence has also been boosted considerably and the chance and openness to meet new people.

What is your favorite part about our Pace Setters Club? I like the diversity of the club and the great support. The club has people from all parts of the world, ages, nationalities, and religions, each one of them with a different story, background, and ways to tell their stories. I also love how well structured the meetings are and how they make sure you learn and improve.

Outside of Toastmasters, how do you spend your time? I have a full-time job as a Research Engineer in the area of Chemical Engineering that takes most of my time but in the last 2 years, I have developed a great passion for learning, entrepreneurship, and business in general. I love to read and learn about chances on how to improve things or create things out of nowhere as long as I find some time slot I will try to learn something new every day. I also love the outdoors and I like to hike or bike in my free time.

What would you tell someone who’s interested in Toastmasters? I think it is a great opportunity to learn and grow, with practice confidence is greatly increased and believe me anybody can be an amazing speaker. I think it is a great chance to learn how to tell your story, take the courage to express yourself, and the chance to also learn from others. I 200 % recommended and in our club you will also have a great team that will be there helping you in the process.
